Power is no longer concentrated in London, Washington or a handful of Western capitals.

It is becoming multipolar.

That raises a fundamental question:

In a world increasingly organized around competing centers of power, does the Commonwealth still have a meaningful purpose—or is it an institution whose historical moment has passed?

The answer is surprisingly complicated.

The Commonwealth is unlikely to become a major geopolitical bloc like NATO or BRICS. But it could remain highly relevant if it recognizes that its greatest strength is not military or economic power.

Its strength is connectivity.

The World That Created the Commonwealth Has Disappeared

The Commonwealth's origins are inseparable from the British Empire.

But the international system that sustained British imperial dominance no longer exists.

Today, countries have multiple options.

An African government can cooperate with Britain while simultaneously negotiating with China.

India can remain in the Commonwealth while leading initiatives outside it.

China's rise is particularly important for the Commonwealth.

India may be the most strategically important country for the Commonwealth's future.

Its population, economy, technology sector, diplomatic reach and growing geopolitical influence give it enormous weight.

India's role also demonstrates how far the Commonwealth has moved from its imperial origins.

India does not participate because Britain commands it.

It participates because membership can serve Indian interests.

India can use the Commonwealth to deepen connections with:

  • African countries;

  • Caribbean states;

  • Pacific island countries;

  • Asian economies;

  • developed Commonwealth members.

This could make India one of the institution's most important agenda-setters.

The Commonwealth's future may therefore depend partly on whether it can become a platform connecting India with Africa, Asia and the small states of the Global South.

The African Union: Partner or Competitor?

The rise of the African Union creates another important question.

African countries increasingly want continental institutions to represent African interests.

The African Union focuses on:

  • continental integration;

  • peace and security;

  • economic development;

  • regional infrastructure;

  • political cooperation;

  • African diplomatic representation.

The Commonwealth cannot replace the African Union.

Nor should it try.

Instead, the two institutions could complement each other.

The relationship could therefore be:

BRICS increasingly appeals to countries interested in:

  • greater representation in international institutions;

  • reducing dependence on Western-dominated structures.

This creates a challenge for the Commonwealth.

A developing country may ask:

Why participate in a historically Western institution when new Global South platforms are emerging?

That is a legitimate question.

The Commonwealth's answer cannot simply be history.

It must provide practical value.

The Commonwealth's Advantage Over BRICS

Yet the Commonwealth has one characteristic that BRICS does not possess in the same way:

its extraordinary diversity of membership.

It contains wealthy developed countries, major emerging economies, developing countries and extremely small island states.

BRICS is more focused on geopolitical and economic cooperation among emerging powers and their partners.

The Commonwealth is more heterogeneous.

That weakness can become a strength.

It can serve as a bridge between different categories of countries.

A small Pacific island nation can sit within the same institutional network as India, Britain, Canada, Australia, Nigeria and South Africa.

That is unusual.

The Small-State Advantage

Multipolarity can actually make the Commonwealth more relevant to small countries.

As major powers compete, smaller states risk becoming arenas of competition rather than independent actors.

The Commonwealth can provide them with an additional diplomatic network.

Caribbean and Pacific states can use collective diplomacy to address:

  • climate change;

  • ocean governance;

  • disaster resilience;

  • development financing;

  • debt;

  • sustainable development.

Their influence comes not from military strength but from coalition-building.

This may become increasingly important as great-power competition intensifies.

The Commonwealth Does Not Need to Become a Geopolitical Bloc

This is perhaps the most important point.

The Commonwealth should not try to compete directly with:

  • NATO;

  • BRICS;

  • the European Union;

  • the African Union;

  • ASEAN.

It lacks the institutional structure and strategic purpose to do so.

Its comparative advantage is different.

It can become a network connecting networks.

Think of the emerging international system as a series of overlapping circles.

A country might simultaneously belong to:

  • the Commonwealth;

  • the African Union;

  • BRICS;

  • a regional economic community;

  • the United Nations;

  • the World Trade Organization;

  • other bilateral partnerships.

There is no requirement to choose only one.

The future international system will probably be defined by this overlapping institutional membership.

The Commonwealth can thrive within that system.

Where the Commonwealth Could Become More Relevant

The organization has several areas where it could potentially become strategically important.

1. Digital Economy

The Commonwealth represents billions of people.

It could facilitate cooperation in:

  • digital government;

  • cybersecurity;

  • digital trade;

  • fintech;

  • data governance;

  • technology education.

This could be particularly valuable for developing members.

2. Climate Change

The Commonwealth includes many highly climate-vulnerable countries.

What happens when member governments simply ignore Commonwealth recommendations?

The Commonwealth promotes democracy, good governance and human rights.

But its members have different political systems and varying democratic records.

If it becomes too assertive, it risks losing cooperation from governments.

In a multipolar world—where governments increasingly emphasize sovereignty—the challenge becomes even harder.

The Commonwealth must find a way to defend its values without appearing to function as an instrument of Western political pressure.

Can It Escape Its Imperial Image?

This may be the Commonwealth's deepest problem.

China does not carry the same colonial relationship with most Commonwealth members.

Younger generations may have little emotional connection to Britain's imperial history.

If the Commonwealth remains centered on British symbolism, it risks losing relevance.

But if it becomes increasingly member-driven, the historical legacy could become less important.

The question becomes:

Can the Commonwealth become post-British without becoming anti-British?

That may be the ideal.

The Commonwealth's Possible Future

There are at least three possible futures.

Scenario 1: Declining Relevance

The Commonwealth remains ceremonial.

Its meetings continue.

Its statements continue.

But major strategic decisions increasingly happen elsewhere.

Young people lose interest.

New institutions absorb its functions.

The Commonwealth slowly becomes an institution of historical memory.

Scenario 2: British Soft-Power Network

Britain attempts to use the Commonwealth primarily as a vehicle for maintaining diplomatic, cultural and economic influence.

This could preserve its relevance but reinforce accusations that the organization remains an imperial afterlife.

It would also fail to reflect the increasingly multipolar nature of the membership.

Scenario 3: A Global Network of Sovereign States

This is perhaps the most interesting possibility.

The Commonwealth becomes less British-centered and more genuinely multipolar.

Its priorities could include:

  • African economic transformation;

  • India-Africa cooperation;

  • digital development;

  • climate finance;

  • youth employment;

  • maritime security;

  • education;

  • trade;

  • technology transfer.

Britain remains an important member—but not the unquestioned center.

This would represent the greatest transformation in Commonwealth history.

The Commonwealth's Secret Weapon: Flexibility

Unlike more formal institutions, the Commonwealth does not require its members to agree on everything.

That flexibility can be useful in a fragmented world.

A country can be:

pro-China on trade,

pro-Western on security,

non-aligned on geopolitical conflicts,

active in BRICS,

active in the African Union,

and still participate in the Commonwealth.

This reflects the reality of twenty-first-century diplomacy.

Countries increasingly want strategic autonomy, not permanent alignment with one bloc.

The Commonwealth's loose structure fits that reality surprisingly well.

The Real Competition Is Not BRICS vs Commonwealth

The future is unlikely to be determined by one institution defeating another.

Instead, countries will belong to multiple overlapping networks.

A Nigerian government might use:

African Union for continental diplomacy.

ECOWAS for regional cooperation.

BRICS for Global South economic diplomacy.

Commonwealth for cross-continental networks.

United Nations for global diplomacy.

China for infrastructure and trade.

United States for investment and security.

There is no contradiction.

This is what multipolarity looks like in practice.

What Would Make the Commonwealth Truly Relevant?

The organization needs to answer five questions.

1. Can it become genuinely member-driven?

Not Britain-centered.

2. Can it deliver practical economic value?

Not merely declarations.

3. Can it represent Global South priorities?

Especially African, Caribbean and Pacific concerns.

4. Can it embrace technology?

AI, digital trade, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure could become major areas of cooperation.

5. Can it confront its history honestly?

A credible post-imperial institution cannot pretend its origins do not matter.

Relevant, But Only If It Evolves

The Commonwealth is not likely to become the next BRICS.

It will not become another European Union.

It will not replace the African Union.

It will not become a military alliance.

And it does not need to.

Its value lies somewhere else.

The Commonwealth is a network that connects countries that increasingly belong to multiple worlds at once.
