Yes, that risk is real: humanity is becoming more connected technologically while some forms of human connection may be becoming thinner, faster, and more mediated.
But “less human” is probably too strong. A better description is that technology is changing which parts of humanity are amplified.
Digital systems amplify communication, speed, visibility, comparison, outrage, convenience, and access to information. They do not automatically amplify patience, empathy, wisdom, loyalty, contemplation, or deep relationships.
That imbalance matters.
A person can communicate with hundreds of people every day and still feel profoundly alone. We can know what strangers on another continent are doing while knowing very little about the person living next door. We can receive thousands of messages while having very few conversations in which someone gives us their complete attention.
So connectivity and intimacy are not the same thing.
Human beings evolved in relatively small communities where communication included facial expression, physical presence, touch, silence, shared work, and long-term relationships. Digital communication removes many of those elements. It gives us extraordinary reach, but often with reduced emotional bandwidth.
This creates a paradox:
We have more contact, but not necessarily more closeness.
Social media demonstrates this particularly clearly. It allows families and communities separated by geography to remain connected. It can help marginalized people find communities. It can spread knowledge and organize humanitarian responses.
At the same time, platforms can turn relationships into visible metrics: followers, likes, shares, views, engagement.
Once social interaction becomes measurable, people can begin performing themselves rather than simply living.
A meal becomes content.
A holiday becomes content.
A relationship becomes content.
Even grief can become content.
The danger is not that people stop having genuine emotions. It is that the boundary between experiencing life and documenting life becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.
There is also the problem of attention.
Human relationships require time.
Listening requires attention.
Empathy requires imagination.
Reflection requires periods without constant stimulation.
Digital environments compete aggressively for precisely those resources.
If someone's attention is repeatedly fragmented by notifications, feeds, messages, recommendations, advertisements, and short-form entertainment, deeper forms of thought can become harder to sustain.
The technological economy increasingly treats human attention as something that can be captured, measured, optimized, and monetized.
That makes attention more than a personal issue.
It becomes a question of human autonomy.
AI could deepen both sides of the paradox
Artificial intelligence may make technology considerably more personal.
Future AI systems could remember people's preferences, communicate naturally, provide emotional support, tutor children, help elderly people, translate between languages, and assist people who are isolated.
These are meaningful benefits.
But AI companionship also creates an uncomfortable question:
What happens when artificial relationships become easier than human ones?
Human relationships are difficult because other people have needs.
They disagree.
They disappoint us.
They require compromise.
They cannot always respond when we want them to.
An artificial companion could potentially be designed to be patient, attentive, available, agreeable, and personalized.
That might make artificial relationships psychologically attractive.
But relationships that never resist us may not develop the same capacities as relationships with independent human beings.
Friendship teaches compromise.
Family teaches responsibility.
Love requires vulnerability.
Community requires tolerance.
If technology removes too much interpersonal friction, it might also remove some of the experiences through which people develop emotionally.
Convenience has an unnoticed cost
Technology continually reduces friction.
We no longer need to memorize directions because GPS remembers them.
We do not need to wait for letters because messages arrive instantly.
We can purchase goods without entering shops.
We can work without entering offices.
We can entertain ourselves without leaving home.
Each individual improvement appears beneficial.
Together, however, they can remove many situations in which people once encountered one another.
The cashier.
The neighbor.
The colleague.
The shopkeeper.
The stranger asking for directions.
The local gathering place.
These interactions may seem insignificant, yet collectively they create social familiarity.
A society optimized entirely for convenience could become highly efficient while also becoming socially sparse.
The shortest route between two economic transactions is not necessarily the healthiest structure for a community.
Technology can also weaken shared reality
Historically, people disagreed while often consuming relatively similar information.
Personalized algorithms increasingly give different people different versions of reality.
Two citizens can live in the same city yet receive completely different political information, cultural narratives, advertisements, and interpretations of events.
This can produce an unusual situation:
physical neighbors but informational strangers.
Human societies require some shared understanding of reality.
Without it, disagreement becomes harder to resolve because people are no longer arguing only about values. They may be arguing from entirely different perceived facts.
Connectivity can therefore coexist with fragmentation.
We may be outsourcing parts of ourselves
Technology originally extended physical capability.
Machines increased strength.
Vehicles increased mobility.
Computers increased calculation.
Now technology is beginning to extend psychological functions.
Search engines externalize memory.
GPS externalizes navigation.
Algorithms externalize recommendation.
AI increasingly externalizes writing, analysis, planning, and decision support.
This is not inherently harmful. Humans have always used tools.
But eventually an important question appears:
At what point does assistance become dependence?
If machines increasingly decide what we read, where we travel, what we buy, whom we meet, what we watch, and perhaps what we think, human agency could gradually weaken without any dramatic moment in which it disappears.
Convenience can surrender autonomy one small decision at a time.
Yet technology can also make us more human
There is an equally important positive possibility.
Technology can give a child access to education previously unavailable.
It can allow grandparents to see grandchildren across continents.
It can help people with disabilities communicate and participate more fully in society.
It can preserve endangered languages.
It can connect people across political and cultural boundaries.
It can expose suffering that governments once concealed.
It can enable enormous humanitarian coordination.
Technology is therefore not inherently dehumanizing.
Often it reveals and amplifies human intentions.
Compassion can scale technologically.
So can hatred.
Education can scale.
So can propaganda.
Community can scale.
So can tribalism.
Technology magnifies humanity rather than automatically improving it.
Human identity may itself be changing
Future generations may not experience a sharp distinction between “online” and “offline.”
For them, digital environments may simply be part of ordinary social reality.
That does not automatically make their relationships less authentic.
Humans have always adapted relationships to communication technologies.
Writing once allowed people to communicate beyond physical presence.
Telephones separated voice from body.
Video calls reconstructed visual presence.
Virtual and augmented reality may eventually create another step.
The important question is not whether communication is technologically mediated.
It is whether the relationship contains genuine attention, reciprocity, vulnerability, responsibility, and care.
Those characteristics may matter more than the medium.
The greatest danger may be becoming measurable
Digital systems increasingly convert human life into data.
Productivity scores.
Engagement metrics.
Credit scores.
Health metrics.
Follower counts.
Performance analytics.
Risk predictions.
Behavioral profiles.
There are useful reasons for measuring these things.
But not everything valuable about human beings is quantifiable.
How do you measure someone's capacity for forgiveness?
Their courage during hardship?
Their loyalty to a friend?
Their ability to comfort a frightened child?
Their wisdom?
Their moral growth?
A civilization that values only what algorithms can measure risks misunderstanding human worth.
The danger is not that machines become human.
It is that humans begin evaluating themselves as machines.
Perhaps humanity is experiencing an attention crisis
The deepest scarcity of the digital age may eventually be neither information nor computing power.
It may be undivided human attention.
Imagine two people having a conversation while neither checks a device.
A parent listening fully to a child.
Friends sitting together without documenting the moment.
Someone walking without consuming content.
A person thinking without interruption.
These ordinary experiences may become increasingly valuable precisely because technology makes distraction effortless.
Future societies might eventually treat attention the way environmental movements treated clean air: as something essential that can be degraded if nobody protects it.
Being human has always involved contradiction
Humans are not defined only by kindness, empathy, and community.
We also possess aggression, vanity, tribalism, envy, greed, and fear.
Digital technology exposes these characteristics because billions of people can now express themselves publicly.
Sometimes what appears to be technology making humanity worse may partly be technology making humanity more visible.
The cruelty existed before social media.
So did generosity.
Now both can be witnessed globally.
That distinction matters.
The future depends on design choices
A different technological culture is possible.
Platforms could optimize more for meaningful interaction rather than maximum engagement.
Education could emphasize critical thinking and digital literacy.
Families could establish technological boundaries.
Cities could continue protecting physical public spaces.
AI systems could support human relationships rather than replace them.
Governments could protect privacy and cognitive autonomy.
Technology companies could design around human well-being rather than attention extraction alone.
These are choices.
There is no law of technological progress saying civilization must become more isolated.
The deepest question
Perhaps being human was never defined by how little technology we used.
Humans have always been technological beings.
Fire was technology.
Writing was technology.
Agriculture was technology.
The printing press was technology.
Electricity was technology.
The internet is technology.
AI is another stage in that history.
What matters is what remains at the center.
If technology helps people understand one another, develop knowledge, reduce suffering, strengthen relationships, and expand human agency, greater connectivity could make civilization more humane.
If technology reduces people to users, consumers, data profiles, engagement targets, and optimized economic units, humanity could become extraordinarily connected while feeling increasingly empty.
So the defining question is probably not:
“Is technology making us less human?”
It is:
“Are we designing technology to serve human values—or gradually redesigning human values to serve technology?”
