THE BIG PICTURE:- Understanding Africa's Pressure Points. Is Africa Sitting on a Political Time Bomb? Africa's future is often described through two competing ideas: the demographic dividend and the demographic time bomb. Both are plausible. Africa has an enormous and rapidly expanding young population, growing cities, expanding consumer markets, abundant natural resources and a generation increasingly connected through smartphones and social media. If governments can convert this human potential into productive employment, education, infrastructure, healthcare and economic opportunity, demographic growth could become one of the continent's greatest advantages. But the opposite scenario is also possible. If population growth continues to outpace the creation of jobs, housing, schools, healthcare, infrastructure and political opportunities, demographic pressure can intensify existing grievances. The result does not automatically have to be political violence or instability...
